FEATURES: A mid century WW2 military footlocker chest with original paint finishes, hand-painted text, zinc lined interior and tons of history.

The Royal Welch Fusiliers is one of the oldest infantry regiments in the British Army, formed in 1689, hence the archaic spelling of the word 'Welch' instead of Welsh. The Regiment became The Royal Welch Fusiliers on 1 July 1881 and served in the Second Boer War of 1899-1902, the First and Second World Wars. In the Boer War and throughout the First World War, the army officially called the regiment "The Royal Welsh Fusiliers", but the archaic 'Welch' was officially restored to the regiment's title in 1920. During those decades, the regiment itself unofficially used the 'Welch' form. Using the military text as a guide, and information about the former owner from Forces War Records, we believe the chest to be from the early - mid 20th century and used on campaign in the Second World War in either British India or Burma.

In pine with ply infills, metal edged lid and kickboard, heavy duty steel reinforced corners and edges, inlaid front and rear faces and inlaid ends with rustic brass studded pine bracings, 3 industrial chest handles, 3 wooden base runners, 2 rear mounted steel lid stays with copper rivets, polished brass escutcheons and 2 working brass locks with key. Featuring authentic charcoal grey painted panels with previous owner's name and regiment to lid 'I.W.P. Campbell Royal Welch Fusiliers'.

DETAILS: Carefully refurbished, original paint finishes and vintage text preserved, wax polished. Featuring knots and quirks, grains, textures and tones for an industrial, distressed finish. Interior cleaned and conserved retaining authentic zinc lining complete with fixing loops and airtight lid seal.

DIMENSIONS (cm): L 105 x H 33 x D42

NOTABLE QUIRKS: Excellent example in superb condition for age. Minor wear including some exterior scuffing and surface ply missing in places, tiny bits of corroded metalwork above the locks on internal zinc lid lip, minor split in zinc lining with some flexibility to interior base. Original external base has been replaced with reclaimed ply in keeping with the chest. Rustic, industrial distressed finish.

Care instructions

All our items are hand finished in several coats of a quality wax polish. A wax finish naturally enhances the wood and revives and protects the original patina, however it doesn't have the same protection as a lacquered finish (the type you may find on shop bought furniture). So to keep your item in tip top condition it's advised to wax it periodically depending on the wear and tear it receives, the suggestion for a coffee table is twice a month. Only the top need be done with a clear wax according to the instructions on the product used. You may also wish to wax the whole piece every 6-12 months to maintain the finish. This will feed, hydrate and protect the wood, maintain the depth of colour and help your furniture to stay looking great!
